I am not talented when it comes to interior design. I just don't have it. Its okay everyone, I completely accept this about myself. So the fall out is that nothing really changes in my home. Its kind a blank slate.
Recently Peter and I found a wall entertainment unit that we really liked. In the showroom it was a medium brown color with lots of lighter high lights. Similar to our floors. We thought it would fit well in our home. When we built our home it was at the end of the light wood era and I with my lack of forsight to see what trends were coming did the light wood cabinets and wood work in my home. I have been paying for it ever since. The cabinets are very nice and expensive. They aren't going anywhere for sometime. I have tried to introduce some darker tones in my house with the new floors but I have no idea if that is even acceptable in the design world.
When our unit arrived it appears quite a bit darker than the model. I asked about it and they said that sometimes the stain varies but it only comes in that color. I know lighting, paint color (or lack of in my house), and other variables affect the tones. So here it is in my living room. I really like it but question if it goes with anything. I don't want random pieces that aren't cohesive. Of course Peter is out of town and not here to give an opinion. There are plans to paint same color as down stairs for those who have been in my home. I have 1 day to decide if I want to return it and keep looking. It seems really dark and its three tones of wood in my house. It doesn't seem to fit. That is my inclination. But, I will put it out there for those who are actually good at decorating to guide me in my decision. Please leave a comment and give your advice. I really need it. I NEED it.
In the picture you can see the unit, my floors, and the rail. The cabinets are the same color as the rail on the opposite side of the room. Front door closed on first, open on second.
I am no expert by any means, but here is my opinion...take it for what it is worth. I think mixing different colors of wood can be very beautiful. It can add accents to areas and make it more appealing. I recently added dark in my home with all my light wood as well and I love it. It was so different and bold for me but the switch has made me happy. That said, if it bothers you now don't do it. You don't want to always regret it. Pretty big purchase if you are not in love with it. I think it could totally work in your home but you have to be in love with it! Good luck with your decision. -Joanna Heron
ReplyDeleteI must do a disclaimer because I don't even know how to hang things on my walls. HOWEVER, just looking at it, I don't find it to clash. I thought it was weird when I moved in our new house that the cabinets are light wood and the bar was black wood . . . and then we ended up buying a dark brown table, but now I kind of love it -- and I like that IF I ever dare hang anything, it can pretty much be whatever wood frame and still blend! :)
ReplyDeleteI like it. I think mixing different color woods can be beautiful too. The darker wood is definitely in right now. Since you can't really change your cabinets or the light wood right now bringing in darker furniture is a good way to update your home. I do have to agree with Joanna's comment if it is going to bother you and you don't like it you will regret it if you don't return it now, but I REALLY like it.
ReplyDeletegeez this is tough. i don't know what i am doing design wise. i do know that you don't always want wood to be matchy matchy. it's ok to have different tones. but maybe not too many different tones.
ReplyDeletegood luck!
I know this is way too late, and I'd love to hear what you decided to do. We live in a house built in 1997, so everything is that honey oak color, which drives me totally bonkers. We decided to ignore the fact that our entire kitchen is that honey color, because we brought a dark buffet with us, and bought couches that match it instead of the cabinets. I like having the dark wood to counteract all the light cabinets. And I really like that unit you bought, and it looks great in that room!
